Liftoff go Atlantis go, throttleing back.

The SSME's(Space Shuttle MAin Engines) throttle back from 104.5% back to 71%IIRC and at the same time there is a change in the physical shape of the solid propellant within the SRB's(solid rocket boosters) which acts as a sort of "throttle-back" of the SRB's at the same time the SSME's reduce thrust. The whole point is to keep loading of the stack/orbiter within design specs. The time at which maximum aerodynamic loading occurs is refered to as MAX-Q.
Just after exitting MAX-Q and when the SSME's were throttling back up to 104.5% and the SRB's returned to providing 100% of their thrust was when Challenger broke up at 71 seconds after launch. I'm guessing that as the SRB's were returning to 100% thust, the bad O-ring seal which was already burning couldnt contain the return to max. thrust. It blowtorched into the external tank causing the lower H2 tank to burst and forced Challenger into a position where huge aerodynamic forces broke her apart.

12,000mph or 4 miles per second.

Engines now have to throttle back top keep the lightweight Shuttle from pulling over 3 g's of pure acceleration.

The flight ascent video are going to be amazing for STS 135, there is special cameras and or data storage on the external tank. It will continue to record as the tank re-enters the atmosphere, this is a first for teh program.

its been a long night, I need to go to bed now, thanks for reminding me this was happening today, glad I was able to catch the liftoff.

I'm glad you caught it too, I heard "Chunky" as well. Weird.

Goodnight, there is a lot of mission in front of us, ther is supposed to be 12 flight days, with a possible plus 1 day if consumables look good.

The schedule of the mission is here
http://www.nasa.gov/tvschedule/pdf/tvsked_rev0.pdf
It is revised daily and they pull the previous day off every day, so I printed my hardcopy off for storage. This is historical..

Docking with ISS is on Sunday.
Burn has started.
